The city of the Marathon Dog Show is

Ónod

The village of Ónod is located in the county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, 22 kilometers southeast of Miskolc.

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is first mentioned in 1296, under the name Olnod. It was already a city in the second half of the 14th century. The castle, the first stone castle of Borsod county, was built at this time. In 1561 and 1582, the Turks besieged it, but did not occupy it. After Eger fell into Turkish hands (1596), Ónod was one of the most important fortifications. In 1639, the Turks burned it down. Later, the Germans shot it down so much that it was no longer suitable as a fortress.

During the Rákóczi War of Independence, Ónod Castle no longer played a military role, but a good number of the former Végvár warriors joined the Kuruc army. Between May 31 and June 22, 1707, the Ónod Parliament was held near the town, during which the House of Habsburg was dethroned. During the War of Independence, the area suffered a lot, and after the Peace of Szatmári, the knightly order that defined the town’s former importance also lost its existence. Despite this, Ónod was able to maintain its role within the county for another century, which only began to decline with the start of industrialization.

The oldest historical monument of the Ónod settlement along the Sajó is the Ónod castle, which has four corner bastions and has survived many wars. The castle is located between the village and the Sajó, and is located on a gravelly and sandy terrace of river origin, 5-6 meters from its once swampy surroundings. There are many rivers and streams in the area (Sajó, Hernád, Hejő, Szinva), which in the Middle Ages made the fortress built on a flood-free eminence difficult to access and well defendable. The castle protected the crossing of the Sajó and the important roads to the east.

Its doom in 1688, it was brought about by marauding Crimean Tatar horsemen allied with the Kurucs, but otherwise marauding everywhere, who set fire to its buildings. In 1701, a census mentions it as a „deserted castle”. The Ónod castle, which became a ruin, was briefly used as a grain warehouse by local residents, and then the fortress was gradually demolished. The count Török family built a castle in the village using the stones of the castle, which were then used to build the Roman Catholic church. The Sajó also greatly contributed to its destruction, the floods of 1845 and 1855 washed away the walls and weakened them. Its final destruction was stopped by the archaeological excavation and restoration that began in 1985 and continued with more or less breaks. In the process, the southeast bastion and the wall sections connected to it were rebuilt, and an exhibition was arranged in the bastion.

One of the attractions of the settlement is the „Török” castle in Ónod. The baroque-style castle was built by József Török between 1746 and 1753. After the Second World War, it served as a Soviet military hospital. Its furniture, furnishings, and library were stolen, the remainder was set on fire by Soviet soldiers, and its park was cut down. It housed a school from the 1950s. The castle is a one-story building with four corner towers. Currently, a part of the primary school in Ónod operates there, named after Zsuzsanna Lorántffy.

Among the civil organizations operating in the settlement, the Ónod Firefighters Tradition Preservation Association is active, and every year they compete in tradition-preserving competitions. Over the past few years, the townscape and infrastructural developments of the Ónod settlement have been implemented, which include the reconstruction and expansion of the kindergarten, the creation of a promenade and recreation park, the renovation of the market square, renovation of rainwater drainage, sidewalk improvements, improvement of basic health care and roof renovation of the Ónod Roman Catholic Church.
