The venue of the CAC & Retro CAC Dog Shows is
Berente
The village of Berente is located 15 km north of Miskolc, near Kazincbarcika.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1322. It was first owned by the Bors and then by the Ákos clan. From the 19th to the 20th century, with the development of a mining settlement and then the chemical industry, Kálmán Kandó founded the Imperial petrochemical coal distillery on 1921.
As a result of industrialization after the Second World War, the region began to develop even more. The Borsod Chemical Plant (BVK) was built in 1949. In 1954, Berente was annexed to the then Kazincbarcika. The BorsodChem Rt. has been operating in the village territory since the privatization.
The settlement belonged until 1950 to the Sajószentpéter of Borsod county. After the change of regime, people living in the area of the former village increasingly felt that they make only a small profit from Borsodchem Rt. As a result of lengthy debates and a 1997 referendum in 1999, Berente separated from Kazincbarcika and became one of the richest municipalities in the country, thanks to revenues from large-scale production.
The classicist-style Szepessy Castle, built in the 17th century, is located in Berente. The edifice was originally set in a large garden surrounded by a high stone wall. There was a guard room at the main entrance, and there was a guard in it all the time, who verified those who wanted to enter. There was a fish pond in the garden with goldfish, lots and lots of flowers in the park, and some shrubs along the walkways. Not far from the castle was the economic courtyard of the Szepessyek, which was also surrounded by a stone wall. In the yard there were maids’ flats and stables, as well as the tobacco barn and a well about 22-25 meters deep. The barn caught fire and burned in the summer of 1935 as a result of a lightning strike.
The castle also had a large orchard. The standby residential buildings of the Borsod Thermal Power Plant are currently located on the site. After the nationalization of Szepessy Castle, service flats were built for the managers of the power plant.
The castle now functions as a residential house, it is home to three families, and the office of the district commissioner of the Sajószentpéter Police Station also replaces it.
The deceased in Szepessy family were buried in a crypt-like graveyard built in the garden of the Reformed parish in Berente. The graveyard was the resting place of seven Szepessy. A few years ago, the corpses were exhumed and transferred to the Reformed Cemetery to a tomb near the belfry.
The town of Miskolc is 15 km from Berente. The city is very rich in attractions. Get to know the city now.
Miskolc
Miskolc is the seat of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county and the third most populous city in Hungary, and the cultural and economic center of the county. Embedded in the eastern side of the Bükk Mountains, the city lies in the valley of 3 rivers, and its exceptional natural beauty is also due to this wonderful location.
Archaeological finds show, that the area was inhabited since ancient times, and today it is considered to be the oldest inhabited area in Hungary. It was already an important trading town in the Middle Ages, and after the Turkish occupation, industry also began to develop. From the 1900s the city began to flourish, independently trying to become the region’s large city, industrial, commercial, financial and cultural center. Miskolc became a citadel of heavy industry during the socialist period. In the years following the change of regime, the emphasis shifted to culture and tourism in the city.
The most significant of its downtown attractions are the Romantic-style Town Hall, the statue of St. Stephen surrounded by a wonderful flowery area, Elizabeth Square with the Elizabeth Bath, the People’s Garden with its fabulous promenades, where the Sculpture Park is located, including the statue of Queen Elizabeth.
Other sights and monuments include the Avasi Reformed Church, the Greek-Oriental Orthodox Church, the Hungarian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Museum, which presents the history and legacies of the Greek-Oriental Orthodox Church, the Plank Church, the building of the late classicist National Theater.
In the vicinity of the city Miskolctapolca, Diósgyőr and Lillafüred offer many sights.
In Miskolctapolca which belongs to the city is a fabulous cave bath, which is one of the most cozy and romantic places in the city. The spa is very popular with locals and tourists alike, as the cave and outdoor spa is an ideal choice at any time of the year, whether for a romantic getaway, a family holiday or a night swim.
In the historic Diósgyőr is the Gothic castle, which was a wedding gift of queens for centuries. The Diósgyőr Castle built in the 15th century, lived its heyday in the time of King Louis the Great, and today is the most significant monument in the country. The ruins of the medieval castle and its restored structures considered are in themselves living museum.
The 2500 sqm palace once was housed about 50 rooms buildings, the four tall towers, and the ground floor of the wings connecting them, and in some places there are upstairs ruins. We can see in the castle itself an exhibition of castle history and weapons, a wax statue of King Louis the Great and the Venetian ambassador, a panopticon, and also a mint. The castle is especially worth visiting in the summer, because in this case the visitors is entertained with castle plays, which takes us back to the time of the Sun King.
At the foot of the Diósgyőr Castle a leisure park of unparalleled beauty invites those wishing to hike. The area is officially called the WOW park, but the people of Miskolc prefer to call it a Fairy Garden. The analogy is by no means unfounded, as its fresh lawn, its flowers in thousands of colors and the cozy little path running through it turn it into a real fairytale world. The garden was dreamed up and created by a local entrepreneur with his friends. The idea was born in his thoughts when he often walked with his dog in the area of the current park, of course only when he could, because this meadow was an extremely neglected, marshy, reed-covered, weedy garbage dump. The contractor wondered how could it be to create a magical resting place in this neglected area.
The landfill eventually turned into a fairytale wonderland following the work of diligent hands where families, young people, lovers, and retirees alike will find the program they love. One of the most prominent attractions of the Fairy Garden is the Venetian carousel, which offers a particularly beautiful view with the evening lights. In addition to the carousel are many carved sculptures, rose gates, wooden promenades and a foliage terrace for nature lovers. The park also has a cozy café with a terrace, an artisanal ice cream parlor and a restaurant, as well as a garden cinema with free screenings on summer evenings. We can really travel to the world of fairy tales with the sculptures of József Demeter, as the characters of the fairy tale film Oz, the Miracle of Miracles can be found along the yellow brick road: Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinsmith, the Lion and Toto too. You don’t have to pay a ticket here and you can bring your dog too!
The surroundings of the city also attract nature lovers, Miskolc belongs to one of the most beautiful natural areas of the country, Lillafüred. The hikers can see here such natural treasures as the Lillafüred waterfall, which is one of the few waterfalls in Hungary.
But there are also the Szinva Valley, Lake Hámori, the world-rare Anna Cave and the largest limestone cave in the region, the István Cave. We can roam Lillafüred really easily thanks to the Lillafüred State Forest Railway built here, which passes by wonderful sights.
The natural sights of the city include the Avasi Arboretum in the interior of Miskolc. Its design and planting of its plant species began in 1986, and out of the 6-hectare area can be visited a 1.5-hectare park, which with pines and evergreens is full. The Avasi Arboretum is home to the richest coniferous collection in Hungary, with nearly 1,000 specimens of 600 plant species. The collection is especially rich in Hungarian-bred pines. The arboretum has 12 kinds of cedar, 36 kinds of fir pine, 39 kinds of spruce, 9 kinds of redwood, 136 types of false cypress, 173 types of juniper, 37 types of yew and 96 types of thuja. The planting of deciduous trees on a new 4.5-hectare area has also begun.
The Miskolc Zoo, one of the youngest and oldest facilities in Hungary, is located in a wonderful forest environment, in the Csanyik Valley. Written records show that in 1355 a royal game garden was already operating in this area, the creation of which is connected with King Louis the Great.
We can see in the Zoo nearly 700 individuals of more than 300 animal species from 5 continents in an environment similar to their natural habitat. In addition to the domestic animal species, here we can see one of the largest flocks of wolves in Central Europe, as well as admire countless birds, big game and predators. The area of the Zoo is adjacent to the Bükk National Park, so it offers a taste of its rich flora to the guests visiting here.
A special feature of the zoo is the nature conservation sculpture park. It commemorates the European naturalists who were instrumental in the development of modern zoo culture; and with scaled, bronze-cast sculptures of extinct animal species, they draw attention to the fact that man can cause irreparable damage to nature. The Zoo awaits its visitors with colorful events at all times, from which all ages can find a variety of programs.
The day of the city of Miskolc is celebrated every year on May 11, the squares, parks and streets of the city are decorated with more than 100,000 annual flowers. The magnificent Flower Clock on Szent-István Square will gain its final shape by this time, so that it can shine in a uniquely fabulous form on City Day.
“A city where it’s good to live, where something always happens, where visitors always find an experience, where they can hold races on Europe’s longest main street, where many people come and where many more can come. Miskolc, where it is worth coming and getting to know it better.”
