City of the Jubilee CAC Dog Shows is

Jászberény

Jászberény is located in the heart of the Great Plain on both banks of the Zagyva River and is the second most populous city in the county as the “capital of Jászság”.

According to archeological monuments, the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, and later later Avars settled in this area. Specifically, the settlement was formed during the reign of the Árpádians, which was unfortunately completely destroyed by the Tartar invasion.

The Jászos populated this region in the 13th century. From that time on, Jászberény became the intellectual, economic and religious center of Jászság. In Turkish times, the city belonged to the sultan’s private treasury, and a palisade castle was built to protect it, which unfortunately became the prey of the fire and was no longer rebuilt. The town also took part in the War of Independence in 1848-49, and the Lehel Hussar Regiment was formed in Jászberény from volunteers recruited from Jászság. After the 1950s, the city began to develop more and more, the first large-scale industrial plants were established, which provided more employment opportunities for the population.

The first of the sights of Jászberény is the Jász Museum, which has been operating since 1931 and presents the written and material memories of the past of the Jászber. The most valuable piece in the collection on display in the listed building is the richly carved ivory horn, horn of Lehel, which, according to the legend, was owned by one of the heroes of Hungarians adventuring in Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the picturesque work of the painter-film director Ákos D. Hamza, the museum also houses the 600-volume library of Ákos D. Hamza.

Other historical sights in the city are the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Gothic origin and the Baroque form, the Franciscan Church, which dates back to the 15th century. built in the 16th century, the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of Jesus.

Jászberény has a lively cultural life thanks to its annual recurring events, such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair and the Jászberény Summer. The internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the János Palotásy Mixed Choir and the Mihály Székely Choir also operate in the city.

The Zoo and Botanical Garden, which has been operating since 1979 and is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary with an area of 4.5 hectares, can be a real recreation for families. The zoo showed an almost constant picture for nearly two decades, but major changes began in the mid-1990s, replacing narrow enclosures with spacious catwalks and introducing further near-natural innovations.

The aim of the zoo is to keep and present the animals in the best possible conditions, so the catwalks are spacious and enriched with environmental elements imitating natural habitats. Like the Hungarian zoos, they consider education and conservation education to be their main tasks.

In 2003, the zoo started to expand towards the arboretum, visitors are literally taken into the forest, where there are three educational trails within the 2-hectare arboretum, and visitors can learn a lot about important things like bird and forest protection. The Bird Protection Educational Trail presents 66 bird protection tools and methods with color images of more than 90 animal species at 41 stations and 50 information boards. The aim of the study trail was to involve the arboretum next to the Jászberény Zoo in the attention of the visitors and thus in the environmental education.
