The city of the 3 x CACIB Dog Show is
Nyíradony
Nyíradony is located in the northeastern part of Hajdú-Bihar County, 30 kilometers from Debrecen. The city, with an area of nearly 10,000 hectares, is located on the northern edge of Dél-Nyírség, on a sand-covered, undulating alluvial cone plain. The population of the settlement, which has 8,500 inhabitants, increases by 50 – 70 people every year.
The earliest owner of the settlement was the Gutkeled family. According to written sources, Adony and the neighboring settlement called Guth were already inhabited in the 11th century. These two settlements were the first residences of the Gutkeled family in Szabolcs County during the Árpád era. At this time, Guth also had a land castle, and near this castle, in Adony, the settled population built a monastery, which was destroyed during the Tatar invasion. Nyíradony once belonged to the county of Bihar. In 1347 it was mentioned as Adonymonostora. After the disaster in Mohács, the monastery was strengthened.
During the period of Turkish subjugation, the monastery played a significant role in preventing the depopulation of the settlement with its reinforced protective walls. Despite this, the village ceased to exist in 1660 as a result of the destruction of Szeidi Pasha’s troops, so much so that written sources do not even mention the settlement until the 18th century. Repopulation began in this century, a wooden church was built in 1748, which unfortunately burned down in 1806.
Under the ownership of the Károlyi family, the village began to develop and slowly stood out from the surrounding settlements. From 1881, it became the seat of the Ligetaljai district, which at that time was the most backward area of the country’s worst-off county, Szabolcs County. It belonged to this district until 1950, when the district was liquidated and its settlements were annexed to the territory of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar counties.
In the 13th century in the Gúhti forest the Romanesque monastery of the Gutkeled family dedicated to the Blessed Virgin was built. The remaining parts of the walls of the former one-nave church with a sacristy are divided by narrow window openings. The Pusztatemplom, standing in a picturesque, wooded environment, and exuding a romantic atmosphere even in its ruins, is a popular destination for hikers.
In March 2023, a visitor center offering a new experience was opened in Nyíradony, where visitors have the opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Gúthi forest. In addition to the spectacle of the connected diorama consisting of 42 wild animals, visitors can get to know the natural beauty, sights, and sounds of the Southern Nyírség Wildlands and the Gúthi forest in a 3D and interactive room. The Gúthi forest is the largest contiguous forest area of the Great Plain, so it was easy to think that it is important to know and take care of our environment.
The building houses a 300-seat auditorium, permanent and temporary exhibitions, an interactive adventure room, a playroom, a kitchen, an outdoor playground and a car park. To ensure a high quality of service, bicycles, a tent, outdoor furniture and a mobile stage were also provided.
A special attraction is the Forest of Lights, a spectacularly lit multimedia trail where visitors can walk through mysterious landscapes accompanied by music. On the illuminated walkway, fairy-tale scenes projected from an external projector and spectacular light effects entertain the youngest children and adults alike during the evening activities.
In addition, a large and technically well-equipped room with its own kitchenette is available for large events, corporate conferences and family gatherings. It will also serve as a community space for local people.
In 2022 was a year of growth in Nyíradony. In February, a dream that had been cherished for 25 years came true for the settlement, as the local ambulance station was handed over. The development is a huge step forward in emergency patient care in the settlement and the region. Among the investments, the implementation of the Science and Technology Park stands out, which is one of the most important investments in the history of the city. A market hall was under construction next to the industrial area, and it is now completely finished. At the same time, large-scale greening is underway with the planted of more than 380 trees, and the modernization of the city market may also be completed in the next period. Thirty years ago, the settlement took a 180-degree turn and developed at a tremendous pace not only in the field of health care, but also in the field of education. Today, a renovated nursery school, several kindergartens, primary and secondary schools await local students, students living in the surrounding settlements and students from across the border. In the city, services are available to satisfy all age groups, and jobs have also been created.
Nyíradony celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022. According to Béla Tasó, Mayor of Nyíradony, there are hard-working people living in Nyíradony. The mayor said that the aim for the future is to create an increasingly liveable environment in the town.
