The venue of the 2 x CAC Dog Show is

Révfülöp

Révfülöp is a resort town with a population of nearly 1,300 located in the picturesque natural environment of the northern shore of Lake Balaton, at the foot of the 274-meter high Fülöp mountain. Its first written mention dates from 1211, but according to the evidence of the finds, it was already an inhabited area in Roman times. Sources mention its origin as early as the 11th century, and its name as the manorial major of the Tihany Benedictine Abbey.

One of the oldest rocks in Hungary, approx. Clay shale, i.e. phyllite, which the locals call peresteg, was formed 400 million years ago. The other characteristic rock, the frost-resistant and easy-to-carve Permian red sandstone, is used as a popular building material in the area. The waste part of it, which is weathered in minerals, has ensured favorable conditions for viticulture on the hillside for thousands of years.

In the Árpád era, a small fishing village was settled around the river. In the 13th century, a small church with a single nave built of red sandstone was erected in the island part. In 1548, the small village, which had been developing nicely until then, was burnt down by cruel Turkish raiders hungry for booty and became completely uninhabitable. Philip was destroyed in the fire, but from the 18th century he was reborn from his dusts.

By the beginning of the 18th century, in addition to the Tihany Abbey, new large and small landowners appeared in the area, and viticulture also gained new strength. In 1752, pilotage resumed, and in 1779 another crossing and pilothouse were built on the coast of Fülöp, which was also mentioned in the first Hungarian-language newspaper, the Magyar Hírmondó.

The current name of the settlement, used since the 19th century, comes from the personal name Pilip, i.e. Fülöp, and the former port crossing. The Fülöp-Boglári river crossing took advantage of the natural advantage of the relative proximity between the two shores (5.2 km) and connected the areas behind the lake with different economic characteristics.

In the last third of the 19th century, the extensive viticulture was brought to an end by the phylloxera blight, i.e. the ravages of grape root rot. The impoverishment of the vineyard owners led to the sale of the land, press houses and cellars, and from that time the development of Révfülöp began again.

Enthusiastic local Balaton patriots, led by Károly Czigány, embraced the development of the settlement’s spa and resort. Due to its favorable natural conditions and picturesque beauty, Révfülöp became an increasingly sought-after holiday resort by the end of the century, where mainly teachers, scientists, manufacturers, military officers, and state officials once again planted vineyards and built their villas and vacation homes.

In 1899, the Révfülöp Bathing and shore beautifying Association was founded, which created the foundations of Révfülöp’s present-day image with large-scale beach and beach-edge building, landscaping, tree planting, etc.

From 1909, Révfülöp became involved in railway transport, from 1911 in domestic telephone traffic, and from 1936 in electricity supply. In 1912, the modern boat harbor was completed, and a decade later a public elementary school was established. Thanks to the spectacular development, Révfülöp first gained the status of a resort in 1933, and then became an independent village on January 1, 1943. A prominent resort since 1969, it rose to the rank of a large municipality from April 15, 1973, and at the same time became the center of the region as the seat of a new joint municipal council. Since 1989, Révfülöp has been an independent settlement with the status of a large municipality.

The area of Révfülöp municipality is 1036 hectares. As a result of its natural features, a structure parallel to the Balaton shore has developed in terms of area and landscape use, and its settlement structure can be divided into four well-defined structural units:

  1. The part between Lake Balaton and road 71, here located are the public parks, the harbor, most of the entertainment venues, as well as the Sziget beach bath and the Császtai beach.
  2. The 71. no. above the main road there is a densely built-up residential and recreation area with public buildings and service units.
  3. Historic vineyard area on the slopes of the Fülöp Mountain, but now reduced to one-tenth.
  4. In the upper third of Fülöp-hegy, in the steeper areas, forest areas close to nature have developed.

The center of Révfülöp is located between the Sziget and Császta headlands. The careful local farmers produce the „True friendship and marriage wine”, praised by Béla Hamvas, on the hillside vineyards.

And according to the former opinion of the eminent geographer Jenő Cholnoky: „One of the most beautiful landscapes in the world can be seen from Fülöp-hegy in Révfülöp. There are higher mountains and larger bodies of water, but where the wonderful multitude of volcanic cones meet the wide body of water, such as at the Brazilian coast, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.”

Among the natural attractions of Révfülöp, the Balaton panorama unfolding from Fülöp-hegy is captivating. The Fülöp-hegy Kilátó was built in 2001, based on the plans of Gyula Pelényi, to commemorate the thousand-year anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state. The 22-meter-high building is one of the most exciting viewpoints in Lake Balaton in terms of its shape, structure and materials. The internal spiral staircase and the roof of the 22-meter-high Fülöp-hegyi lookout tower became victims of the fire at dawn on 13th February of 2020. The expert examination after the fire revealed that the fire did not damage the stone structure of the lookout. The inner stair column had to be replaced and the terraces and the entire wooden structure had to be rebuilt. The lookout was re-inaugurated and opened on 17th July of 2021.

Opposite the railway station at the foot of the mountain, we find the ruins of the medieval Fülöp village’s red sandstone church from the 13th century with a finely carved semicircular stone doorway and a gabled doorway. The remains of the single-nave Romanesque building were conserved by the monument office in 1953, and the walls of the church, with the triumphal arch and the rising gable wall above, are almost as they were when it was built. The monument was restored in 2000 and 2001.

Walking in the shade of the cool trees towards the boat station, the Europe promenade runs along the shoreline of Lake Balaton, next to Szigeti beach. It’s a pleasant place to relax on the benches or lie on the grass and watch the thousands of faces of Lake Balaton. Anglers also enjoy fishing on the red-stoned coastal part of the boardwalk.

Not far from the promenade, towards the boat station, at the end of Halász Street, you will find the Community House, rebuilt according to the plans of Gyula Pelényi, which houses the Local History Collection and the permanent exhibition of the history of the place and the spa, as well as the Lakeside Gallery.

Turning towards the port, which was renovated in 1991, we see the imposing former casino building built at the beginning of the century. The wall is decorated with a relief of József Pattantyús. In May 2004, the square in front of the building received a decorative covering.

On the monument erected in 1912 in the park next to the marina and the rose garden, you can read the lines of a bronze plaque: „In recognition of the merits of the late Károly Czigány, the tireless Révfülöp pioneer of the cult of Balaton, the Balaton Association erected this permanent monument in 1912.” The main events of the settlement’s history (20.VIII.1970) were recorded on the same monument and II. also the memory of the victims of World War II in Révfülöp /1992.X.23./
