The venue of the Széchényi Memorial Show 2 x CAC Dog Show is
Nagycenk
Nagycenk is a large village, it is located in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, on the Ikva Plain, on the outskirts of Western Hungary. The southwestern part of the border is hilly and connects to the spurs of the Sopron Mountains.
Nagycenk and its surroundings were the estate of the Széchényi family. Count Ferenc Széchényi and his son, Count István Széchenyi, lived here. Their former village has become a national pilgrimage site, which worthily preserves their memory.
The Széchenyi Castle is one of the most beautiful rural castles in Hungary. Its construction was started around 1750 by General Antal Széchényi. The wrought-iron gate of the entrance was surrounded by guard buildings. There used to be a French garden between the entrance and the castle. A large hall was created on the upper floor of the middle part of the main building. A two-story chapel was built on the eastern side of the building, and a theater hall on the western side. A large Széchényi coat of arms was placed on the central facade of the building. After the reconstruction of the castle, in 1973, the István Széchenyi Memorial Museum opened in the main building. Hungary’s largest memorial museum presents the history of the Széchényi family and the life of István Széchenyi.
In the center of the village, on the church hill, stands the parish church named after King St. Stephen. This building, which still stands today, was built with the support of the Széchényi family, which is why the Széchényi family coat of arms was placed above its ornate main entrance. A full-length bronze statue of Count István Széchenyi stands on the square in front of the church.
The Széchényi family mausoleum is located in the cemetery garden near the parish church. A straight path leads from the cemetery gate to the family tomb in the middle of the cemetery. The entrance to the tomb’s vestibule opens between 2 Doric columns, from here we reach the oval-shaped chapel, next to the altar of which the crypt opens. The large Széchényi family is still buried in the ancient cemetery with lush vegetation today. Many of their more recent graves can be seen along the walls.
Opposite the entrance to the castle, the 20-meter-wide, 2.6-kilometer-long linden tree line, which is now a world heritage site, begins. Count Antal Széchenyi and his wife Zsuzsanna Barkóczy had the beautiful double tree line planted in 1754. It was originally used as a riding trail. The number of 645 small-leaved linden trees when they were planted has now decreased to 461. Over the course of more than 200 years, a third of them have died out. Their average height is around 16 m.
The promenade was used for horse riding. At the end of the Széchenyi linden tree line, which stretches for more than two kilometres, is the burial place of Béla Széchenyi, and his wife, Hannah Erdődy, who died young. The huge sarcophagus, made of red granite and decorated with bronze reliefs, was erected by Count Béla for his wife, who died at the age of 27, giving birth to his daughter. Count Béla Széchenyi was buried next to his beloved wife in 1918, after 46 years of widowhood.
Next to the linden tree line, the Széchenyi Museum Railway’s steam locomotive and railway carriages tempt you on a nostalgic journey. The train, which runs from April to October, transports passengers between the Széchenyi Castle in Nagycenki and the railway station in Fertőboz. Guests can drive the locomotive themselves under supervision and receive a certificate of their driving skills at the end of the journey.
The locomotive museum, located next to the Museum Railway, offers visitors a wealth of specialities from the past of the small railways. You can see steam locomotives, passenger, freight and log wagons from the past. The locomotive museum’s carriage fleet consists of 9 carriages of various types and purposes. We can see characteristic pieces of open and closed freight carriages and passenger carriages up close.
