The venue of the 2 x CAC Dog Show is

Hegyeshalom

Hegyeshalom large village is situated in the natural environment of the Moson plain in Győr-Moson-Sopron county. The village has 4340 inhabitants.

Hegyeshalom was first mentioned in 1217 under the name Hegeshalm, which refers to a hill with a pointed top. The Roman Catholic church built on the hill was dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Santa Maria). The German version of this name is the origin of the name Sammaria – Sommerein. The name Strass, which dates from the 17th century, refers to the settlement’s location on the main road. From these, the present German name Strass Sommerein was derived.

The large village of Hegyeshalom was Hungary’s most famous railway and road border station until the country’s accession to the Schengen Agreement. The Budapest-Vienna railway line (including a junction to Bratislava), the M1 and A4 motorways and the national highway No. 1 make it the eastern gateway to Western Europe.

A varied landscape welcomes the visitor. From the road 1, the M15 motorway, which runs almost from north to south, and the economic units at the traffic junction are visible from the east, while the border crossings and the economic units, hotels and restaurants are visible from the west. From Rajka-Bezenye, the beauty of the Moson countryside and the natural beauty of the outskirts of Hegyeshalom become visible. To the north, off the main roads, the spacious area of Márialiget, one of the suburban settlements, is dominated by almost untouched grassland and planted forests, which are devoid of human presence and human intervention.

In the south, in the area of Csemeztanya the cultivated plots are networked by a system of gravel agricultural roads. In the 1990s, many areas were explored for gravel extraction for the construction of highways. The so-called In addition to Öreg Tó, several lakes were created during mining, the largest of which is the 100 ha mining lake along Csemeztanya. Extraction is currently taking place in the northern and southwestern parts of the lake.

The lifestyle and employment structure of the inhabitants of Hegyeshalom is shaped and transformed on an almost daily basis by the fact that it is an important rail and road transport hub. It is an important centre for tourism and transit traffic. An increasing number of private businesses are providing commercial, catering and other services that exceed the city’s standards.

Throughout its history, Hegyeshalom has experienced much bitterness. Settlements have been shaped by immigration and emigration, and a cohesive community has developed. The many different peoples have fused to form the Hegyeshalom of today. The local community life is very active. Communities that work together are the heart of the settlement.

Lake Stettni is an excellent place for hiking in the large village. Its history is known from the fact that in ancient times there was a natural pond fed by rainwater, known as Gstettni, from which gave it its present name: Lake Stettni.

The church of St. Bartholomew is one of the churches in the village. The 13th-century Romanesque church was converted to Gothic in the 15th century, when the Gothic interior wall paintings were also made. The Baroque style conversion was carried out in the 18th century, when the church was also furnished. The church’s tower, supported by buttresses and pierced with Gothic windows, served as a defence during the Ottoman period. The upper level was built in the 18th century. The nave connects two periods. The eastern end is medieval. A Gothic sanctuary was built for the 18th century nave, which was dismantled during the 1979 renovation, exposing the vault, the triumphal arch and the painted figures of the balga and the clever virgins that adorn it. Opposite the nave-vaulted sanctuary is the Baroque altar.

At the time of the spread of the Reformation, the church belonged to the Evangelicals, only to be reverted to the Catholics during the Counter-Reformation and given a new patron saint, St. Bartholomew. He is depicted in the altarpiece from the early 18th century, which, as a result of the last renovation, hangs in a unique way behind the worshippers attending mass. The pulpit dates from the mid-18th century. The renovation has brought back everything from the past. In 2011, the church and the clock were restored, partly with the help of local residents.
