The city of the CAC Dog Shows is

Dombóvár

Dombóvár is situated in the middle of South Transdanubia, at the junction of Tolna, Baranya and Somogy counties, at the south-western tip of Tolna county, with the Kapos river flowing along its southern border. The town and its surroundings have excellent natural resources.

The origin of the name of the settlement can be traced back to the time of the conquest. The Hungarians at the time of the conquest found a small Slavic population in the area along the Kapos, who lived on the islands in the floodplain of the river, on which there were many swamp oaks. The mentioned type of wood is called dobov(o) in the Slavic language, which is where the settlement got the first part of its name. The second part of the settlement’s name refers to the castle in today’s Szigeterdő. In the 15th century, the fortress was owned by the Dombai family, who held important court dignitaries and county offices. After the death of the male branch of the family, the castle was acquired by István Werbőczy, a judge of the regional court.

In the territories conquered by the Turks, the city became a smaller administrative unit of the Koppány sandzák (district) of the Buda Pashalik (governorship). It was freed from Turkish subjugation in September 1686 by the imperial army of Louis of Baden. In 1691, Palatine Pál Eszterházy bought the then settlement and the derelict areas around it. It was then that a slow development process began in the life of the city.

The real development of Dombóvár came with the construction of the railway. In 1872 the Dombóvár-Zákány line was completed, and then continued with the construction of the Dombóvár-Bátaszék-Baja, Budapest-Pécs, Dombóvár-Veszprém lines. In the course of a few decades, it became the transport, industrial and commercial centre of the region. By 1908, Dombóvár was in an advantageous traffic situation, and this also influenced the development of industry. Citizens appeared in the agricultural settlement, and the city in a few decades it became the transport, industrial and commercial center of the area. The turn of the century also brought other changes to the town. In 1902 the name of the town was changed from Ódombóvár to Dombóvár. The construction of infrastructural elements such as the electricity network and the paving of roads and pavements began. Its advantageous geographical location has always been decisive for transport. This is why it became the railway centre of Southern Transdanubia. This opened up further development opportunities. The absorption market increased and several factories were established, including a cannery, a butter factory, a mill and a tallow plant. In addition to the elementary schools, with the strengthening of the middle class, there was also a need to establish a secondary school. In 1929, the royal Catholic Miklós Eszterházy high school in Dombóvár was built, which has since educated several famous students, such as the poet Gyula Illyés. Dombóvár was declared a city on 01 April of 1970.

In 1973 drilling started in the area of Gunaras, and alkaline-hydrocarbonate hot water was discovered, making it possible to build a thermal and spa bath, which is still the main tourist attraction in the life of the city.

In the summer of 2007 an archaeological excavation began in Dombóvár during the construction of the city’s newest shopping center. The excavation extended the city’s past to 25,000 years, as memories from that long ago were unearthed.

The most beautiful park in Dombóvár is the Sziget Forest (Peace Park), a nature reserve. The site of today’s park was originally 10 hectares of swamp forest, today it covers an area of 4.5 hectares. The trees in the park are 70-100 years old and are a valuable ornithological habitat. It is also the site of the so-called Dombóvár Hopeful Tree, an oak with a stalk, and the headstone of Mátyás Szuhay, which is placed in front of the oldest tree in the park.

It is also the site of the nationally important Kossuth statue, which once stood next to the Parliament building in Budapest. The monumental work was unveiled on Kossuth Square in Budapest in 1927. In 1951, the composition was dismantled and dismembered, and after a long period of dismemberment, it was moved to Dombóvár. The detailed history of the sculpture group can be seen on the second floor of the medieval residential tower excavated and rebuilt in Szigetredő, while on the first floor there is an exhibition by the Dombóvár-born ceramic artist couple Majoros.

The Gunarasi beach and spa is a famous spa resort, built on the sulphurous thermal waters. On the boating lake in the Gunaras spa area is the St. Vendel Island, where lovers can click a padlock on the heart that is displayed there.

From 1991 material presenting part of the birdlife of the county was placed in the classroom of the educational center of the downtown elementary school. In the natural science showroom, in addition to the ornithological material, trophies, egg, nest, fruit, beetle and butterfly collections can also be viewed in the galleries. The nature conservation showroom presents the living world of Dombóvár’s green belt.

The Seven Continents Park presents the typical plants of the continents on our planet, which was created with the help of public workers.

The Konda Valley with the wide valley of the Konda creek divides Ódombóvár and Újdombóvár. By damming the stream were created the Tüskei fishing lake and the Szállásréti lake.

The Dombói castle-ruin is a castle ruin located on the banks of the Kapos river in the border of Dombóvár, which got the name of today’s Golyavár from the birds that nest here. According to the excavations, a more important Renaissance building may have stood here.

The Szőlőhegy Szent Anna chapel and spring were built in 1870. In 1912 a tower was built for it. In 1920, Szőlőhegy was annexed to Vásárosdombó Parish, because it was administratively part of Kaposszekcső. When Dombóvár received city status, Szőlőhegy was attached to it. In 1992 was added to the Dombóvár Parish.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Heart of Jesus is a baroque church built in 1725.

Steam locomotive 424 was completed in 1943 and is located between the Dombóvár railway station building and the Railway History Museum.

The Water Tower is an industrial facility that has become a symbol of Dombóvár.
