The city of the 2 x CAC Dog Show is
Derecske
The town of Derecske is located in the eastern part of Hungary, 22 km from Debrecen, along the highway number 47. The name of the settlement first appeared in written records in 1291. According to the evidence of archaeological findings, this region was inhabited even before the conquest.
Derecske was the scene of a significant national event, when George Frater, in order to counteract the conspiracy of Ferdinand’s supporters, called a meeting of the Tiszántúli orders in Derecske on 1 August 1543. The Derecske assembly was an important stage in the formation of the independent Transylvanian principality that was to emerge from the Hungarian Kingdom of the East.
A new era in the early modern history of Derecske began when the Transylvanian prince Bethlen Gábor donated part of the village’s estate to the András Nagy András, the captain of the Hajdú chiefdom in the summer of 1608. It was during his few years of ownership that the village came into contact with the Hajdú. Then in the summer of 1631, Prince György I. Rákóczi with a letter of privilege settled Szabolcsi hajdús in Derecské, which thus became a hajdú town.
In Hungary, the medieval settlement network remained largely intact until the end of the 16th century, but the Fifteen Years’ War caused considerable destruction, especially in the Conquest and its periphery. The Tatar devastation was particularly severe in the Bihar areas south of Debrecen, with Derecske almost at the centre of the area. Later Pál Esterházy receives the city in exchange for the arrears of the noble’s salary, but he can only assert his rights after the Rákóczi’s War of Independence, because the hajduks, deprived of their privileges, refused to accept the change of their fate.
The real ordeal of the 2. World War hit the village in October 1944. In 1948 the population exceeded 10,000 and is still close to that number. From the 1960s, the village’s appearance changed, the old, characteristic, dignified, neoclassical, porch-fronted, modest farmhouses disappeared from the streets of Derecske. The rapidly changing building trends make the image of the town, which was re-certified as a town in 1991, rather eclectic. The centre of the town has also been transformed, with the appearance of apartment blocks, apartment buildings and condominiums. There are very few listed or monumental buildings. These include the Reformed Church in the main square of the town, the late Baroque Catholic Church, the 17th century Catholic parish, and the two-storey building that served as the Reformed Church’s boys’ school for two centuries. The town has a relatively large number of old peasant buildings with 19th century vernacular architecture.
After the change of regime, individual businesses in the city began to develop rapidly, especially in the fields of services, trade, catering and agriculture. Among the industrial enterprises, furniture production, woodworking, and the production of metal structures are significant, but the main source of livelihood for the population is agriculture. The economic life of the settlement is favorably influenced by its proximity to Debrecen, its location next to highway number 47 (M47).
The livelihood of the families in the settlement is primarily ensured by income from agriculture. Derecske is excellently suitable for intensive plant cultivation due to its characteristics as a growing area. Farmers in Derecske have always used this feature, so horticulture plays a significant role in high-quality crop production. This production technology can provide employment to a significant number of workers.
n 2013, the settlement again became the seat of a district. It is the cultural, educational and economic center and seat of the Derecske-Létavértes Small Region. In the past five years, the city’s foreign relations and cross-border roles have strengthened. It has established close cooperation with its sister cities Mátraderecské, Székelykeresztúr, Nagyszalonta, Bánffyhunyad, Dereské in the highlands and Koszyce in Poland.
In the 1990s, the city’s ambulance station was built, as well as the sports hall that hosts sports and city events. The town of Derecske has a nursery school, kindergarten, primary and secondary school, as well as an art school, cultural and traditional events, a rich sports life, a secondary school and an art school. The high standard of public services shows the image of a livable, developing small town that flexibly adapts to the challenges of the 21st century. Thanks to the investments financed by the European Union, many developments have been realized in the city of Derecske in recent years. Among other things, a sewer network was built throughout the city, the quality of drinking water improved, and educational, cultural, and health institutions were also modernized.
