Venue of the CAC Dog Shows is
Kazár
The village of Kazár is one of the most interesting and significant settlements in the north-eastern part of Nógrád County. It lies 7 kilometers from Salgótarján, at the northwestern foot of the Mátra Mountains. The mountains and hills surrounding the village are geologically the same age as the Mátra – twenty million years old
The first written record of Kazár dates back to 1221, but the remains of a Celtic settlement located on the outskirts of the village prove that it was an inhabited region much earlier. Many older and more recent researches support the assumption that the name Kazár preserves the memory of the Kazár (Kabar) tribes that joined the Hungarians and broke away from the Khazar Empire. This is symbolized by the Hungarian bow held by two hands in the village’s own coat of arms.
In the days following the Rákóczi War of Independence, 16 Hungarian houses were listed in Kazár, but the settlement began to develop significantly in the 18th and 19th centuries. An earthquake devastated the village in 1863, and cholera depopulated the village in 1873. The village’s cultural and historical values, known as the „palócfaház” (wooden house), have been mentioned since the 17th century. In 1674, the then parish priest of the village lived in such a house.
In 1861, coal production began in the area. In the village, which had previously been engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, mining emerged as a new activity. All this shook the economies and more and more people sought livelihood opportunities in industry. The real change began in the 1920s, when the first mine was opened in the settlement, and by the end of the 20th century, Kazár had developed into a thriving mining village. The Nógrád Coal Mines Company employed a significant number of the local male population until the mid-eighties.
In addition to mining, the village’s population primarily lived as farmers, loggers, and industrial workers employed in Salgótarján.
The village experienced many mine closures in the 20th century. The resulting layoffs affected many Kazár families deeply, as it was very difficult to find work in the industrial plants of the county seat. Mines with small investment requirements operated in the Kazár area until 1985.
The Kazár Mining Exhibition commemorates the settlement’s mining past, where uniforms, equipment, tools, mining-related books, awards, and other documents can be viewed.
In the center of the Old Village, there is a neat little peasant’s house, the Handicraft House. The building is a stage for folk crafts, where visitors can learn about weaving, basketry, disc making, embroidery. The building also displays beautiful laces collected from the settlement and works made by straw weavers active on the Kőrispatak.
The Iron and Foundry Museum, unique in the county, operates in Kazár. Visitors can see countless treasures here, from charcoal irons to electric irons, from cast iron picture frames to old soda bottles.
In Country House of Kazár, visitors can learn about the material relics of folk lifestyle, the process of hemp processing, and gain insight into the living conditions of the villagers through a „clean room”.
The Palóc Gallery presents the folk craft culture and other forms of expression of the Palóc region. Visitors can get acquainted with folk tools, toys, furniture, and the folk costume of Kazár through dolls and life-size puppets.
The Bear Kuckó, the Bear and Doll Collection, is also famous. The unique exhibition space in the region has more than 2,000 bears and dolls for both children and adults. Visitors can see the collection of Márta Bóné.
The Roman Catholic Church are in the village center, dedicated to Saint Helena, is believed to have been built around 1398. The walls of the church in the sanctuary and on the eastern side of the nave probably hide the remains of an ancient church from 1398.
István Szabó, a scholarly priest, writer, and translator, was a defining figure in the life of the village in the second half of the 19th century. He was the first to translate Homer’s two great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, into Hungarian. He was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Kisfaludy Society, and published under the name „The Priest of Kazár” between 1857 and 1892. Ferenc Kazinczy wrote about him with great praise even when he was young. In 1995, posterity erected a statue in his memory in the parish garden, and his memorial room was opened in 1997. His renovated tomb is located in the Kazár cemetery.
In the forest above the village, there is a unique, protected natural value, the 20 million-year-old rhyolite tuff erosion, similar to which is found in only 6 places in the world, the closest being in Cappadocia, Turkey. This is the lowest and oldest of the three characteristic tuff levels found in the Miocene formations of Hungary. This unusual-looking rock, with its white, crested waves, was formed 20 million years ago as a result of volcanic activity. The soft tuff surface was shaped into its current form by water erosion. The extremely varied terrain, cut by deep trenches and dotted with towers and cones, is an unparalleled sight, as if we were walking on the surface of a petrified, foaming sea.
