The city of the 3 x CACIB Dog Show is

Pápa

Pápa is located at the confluence of the Bakony Mountains and the Kisalföld, which is the second most populated settlement of Veszprém county, outstandingly the cultural, economic and tourist center of the region.

The area of the settlement has been inhabited since the Neolithic. Although in Roman times the road between Szombathely (Savaria) and Győr (Arrabona) went to this, no settlement was established. The first written mention of the town is from 1061, which is about the donation of a mill. It follows that the Pápa was a significant market town at the time. In Pápa were 22 mills in the first half of the 19th century, whose driven by the Tapolca stream. Today, however, the dried-up stream due to bauxite production and industrialization would no longer be able to supply the mills, so they can only be found in the city as an attraction rather than a working one.

The role of the city began to expand from the middle of the 18th century, schools were established and have been operating ever since. Pápa was already a reputable school town in the middle of the 19th century. Its nationally renowned school is the Reformed College, originally founded in 1531, where Sándor Petőfi and Mór Jókai also studied. The other school with a similar reputation is the Türr István High School, founded by the Paulines in 1638 and now state-owned, where the hungarian reformer, Ferenc Deák studied.

An important element of the city’s history is the blue painting workshop of the Kluge family currently living in Canada. It was established in 1786 in Pápa. The workshop was fed by the water of the Tapolca stream. Until the 19th century, blue painting was done by hand, but later by steam engines, which was one of the best in Hungary at the turn of the century. The workshop, along with the craft, passed from father to son in the Kluge family until this private enterprise was closed in 1945 during nationalization. The workshop has been home to a museum since 1962 that showcases a craft with a long history.

Pápa is one of the most beautiful small baroque towns in Hungary. It lived its heyday in the 1700s as the estate center of the Esterházy family. Outstanding among its sights are its churches , thirteen building, which, not only because of their size, rise above the residential houses of the small baroque town. If the traveler looks at the silhouette of the city from afar, he first sees the towers of the temples, which hide secrets. These buildings are witnesses to the history that lives with us.

Pápa as one of the centers of extensive estates, was sought to be constructed in such a way that it worthily represented the authority and wealth of the Esterházy family. Count Ferenc Esterházy built a baroque castle, and his son, Count Károly Esterházy, Bishop of Eger, built a new, imposing parish church. Count Károly Esterházy is associated with a number of constructions. He was the one who drained the lake next to the castle, created a park in its place, abolished the medieval rampart system, and modernized the structure of the streets and squares in the spirit of the age, which still decisively defines the cityscape today. The city center dates back to the Middle Ages. The narrow, winding streets have retained their original shape, although most of the houses are more recent. The oldest building still standing today is the 15th century Corvin House. The 19th-century, early 20th-century houses in the city center have been renovated, the Main Square is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in Central Europe.

Esterházy Castle is located on Fő tér, behind the Great Church. The baroque castle and the former fortification system played an important role in the history and development of the city. The renovated castle is once again a major tourist attraction for the city. The most beautiful room of the 18th century U-shaped palace is the Palatine Hall, with the image of the city at that time. The castle is as luxurious as any other palace owned by the family, well worth a visit. Upstairs is the Castle Chapel, which today serves as the Jókai Library. The beautifully restored frescoes in the room offer wonderful. In the park in front of the castle there are statues of Jókai and Petőfi. The Castle Garden is a really nice resting place on 100 hectares, which people often visit.

In the park of Esterházy Castle, the park referred to as the Castle Garden surrounds the building as an extensive green area. Before the war, the park was huge, many larger than today, largely a game park that the common people could not enter. After the war, the forest was almost completely exterminated. The park, when mutilated and then restored, is beautiful.

The Castle Garden Bath is located in the Outer Castle Garden. Those who want to relax can live in a pleasant environment with a variety of services, which include both forms of activities that ensure the preservation of health and active sports, as well as those that promote active rest and regeneration.

There is no shortage of museums and galleries in the city. The best known is the Blue Painter Museum, mentioned above, which provides an insight into the world of cold indigo painting, a new process of the 18th century. The museum has three permanent exhibitions: the history of the Kluge family and the presentation of the technique of blue painting, the exhibition of the oeuvre of the artist Irén Bódy and the presentation of the blue painting masters of Hungary. The museum was opened in 1962 and then renovated in 1983, on the two hundredth anniversary of the blue painting workshop.

Those interested can view the Pomegranate Museum Pharmacy, which was founded in the 1700s and patterned the pharmacy of older times. The Coat of Arms and Weapons History Exhibition is really remarkable, most of the objects are from the 19th to the 20th century. century. If you are interested in fine arts, visit the A. Tóth Sándor Gallery, the Somogyi József Gallery or the Hollósí Gallery.

The cultural programs, which traditionally return every year, attract many visitors to the city. St. George’s Day Agrárexpo is open in April. Pápa City Day is celebrated in June and the Pápa’s International Games Festival is held as a recurring program. At the events of the Pápa’s Historical Days, traditionally held in August, the visitor can travel back a bit in history. The traditional program for November is the St. Martin’s Day New Wine Festival and the Advent program series.

Pápa is one of the most beautiful cities in Transdanubia, where history and knowledge surround everything. It is worth visiting and getting to know this charming small baroque town!

Come and visit us too, the organizers are waiting for you!
