The city of the 3 x CAC Dog Show is
Debrecen
Debrecen is the second largest and most populous city in Hungary, and the cultural, economic, tourist and transport centre of Eastern Hungary. Today it is considered one of the most dynamically developing cities in Hungary.
Often referred to as Calvinist Rome or Civis city, Debrecen gained the status of a field town in the 1300s, then a royal city in the 1600s, and has twice been the capital of the country. Its history has been intertwined with the Reformation for centuries, as evidenced by its many historical monuments, including Kossuth Square, the Memorial Park and the Nagyerdei Szoborpark.
Among its attractions is the symbol of the city, the 1800s neoclassical Reformed Great Church, which is the largest Reformed church in the country and in which the armchair of Lajos Kossuth is kept as a relic. The building is located in the heart of the city, on Kossuth Square, behind which is the Reformed College, which has been in operation since the 1500s and whose prestige was established by its famous teachers and students. The large library of the College, with its half-million holdings – including rare books – is the largest collection of the Reformed Church in Hungary.
Next to the College is the neo-baroque Déri Museum. In its most famous part, the Munkácsy Hall, you can see two works from Mihály Munkácsy’s world-famous Christ trilogy.
Other attractions in the city centre include the stately Golden Bull Hotel, the oldest hotel in the country and still in operation, the Main Square, with the city’s glass mosaic coat of arms in the centre, and the neoclassical Town Hall, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
Among the city’s rich cultural offerings are the colourful and wonderful Flower Carnival on 20 August, the Jazz Days, the Poetry Festival and the Summer University.
The most popular tourist event in the city is the Flower Carnival, unique in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the city for the spectacle linked to the coronation of the founder of the state, St. Stephen, and the Feast of the New Bread. The main event of the week-long event, the Flower Carnival, is more spectacular every year, with a fabulous display of flowers and a majestic fragrance. The Flower Carnival also offers a wide range of quality entertainment, concerts, dance performances, children’s activities and a fireworks display to crown the day.
For families is a real treat the Zoo, and has been welcoming visitors since 1958. In the nearly 60 years that have passed, the area of the Zoo has grown continuously, and now it can be said that a park meeting EU standards has been created, where visiting families and guests can view around 1,500 specimens of 165 species from 5 continents.
For the species living here, the conditions provide significantly greater prosperity and a better sense of well-being than before. The area, together with the 341 plant species found here, has been under nature protection since 1994.
Among the natural attractions of Debrecen, the Nagyerdő stands out, which since 1939 has been Hungary’s first nature reserve, extended with a zoo, an amusement park and a botanical garden, whose original flora is identical to that of the Great Forest. The arboretum is home to around 8,000 species of plants, including many tropical rarities, and a collection of cacti with 2,000 species and 10,000 plants, a collection of European fame.
