City of the 2 x CAC Dog Shows is

Pilis

Pilis is located in the southeastern part of Pest County, east of the Danube, 46 kilometers from Budapest, next to the main road 4. It is located on the spur of the Gödöllő Hills, at the junction of the Monor–Irsai Hills and the Duna–Tisza sand ridge. The source area of the Gerje stream is located within its borders.

The first known written record, dated 1326, mentions the settlement as Pilis. The first known owner of the village – as several written records prove – was the Pylisi family, from whom the settlement got its name.

This ancient settlement developed along the migration route of various ethnic groups from east to west, as evidenced by rich archaeological remains. Experts have uncovered finds from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, dating from the 2nd–4th centuries. very rare early Sarmatian mound graves from the 16th century (around the fishing pond), as well as graves from the Avar and Conquest eras (next to a hunting lodge).

Elek Fényes’s Geographical Dictionary of Hungary, published in 1851, provides ample evidence that there were four villages with this name at that time. However, according to the decision of the National Municipal Register Committee, since 1900, only this municipality has been entitled to use the name Pilis to name the settlement.

The name Pilis is first mentioned in a known document in 1326. In the 14th–15th centuries, it was owned by the Pilisi family. It became extinct at the beginning of the Turkish occupation, in the middle of the 16th century. It was acquired as a puszta by the Fáys, and from 1711 it belonged to János Beleznay, who settled it with Slovaks from the Highlands. In the 19th century, it became the property of the Nyáry and Gubányi families.

Market town since 1805. In the second half of the 19th century, the language was still almost entirely Slovak. The Slovaks of Pilis gradually lost their language during the 20th century, and by the 1960s and 1970s, the language exchange became unstoppable. Today, only a few dozen locals still preserve the language of their ancestors. However, a large Lutheran religious community still preserves its Slovak heritage.

The city is home to the country’s fifth largest Lutheran congregation (6,500 people). The Baroque Lutheran Church was built in several stages at the end of the 18th century, largely at the expense of the Beleznay family. Its vaulted interior has galleries resting on arched openings. Its altar with a pulpit was built in 1903 using classicist elements.

The Town Hall building is a one-story classicist corner house. Straight-closing windows, with a straight cornice above them with romantic decoration.

One of the oldest castles in the county, a U-shaped, Baroque-style castle built by the local landlord, János Beleznay (after the Peace of Szatmár by an Italian master). The building is an outstanding example of Baroque castle architecture from the Maria Theresa era. The two-story Baroque-style main building, standing in the middle of a still-significant park, is flanked on both sides by towers, which are joined by ground-floor side wings and form a cozy inner courtyard. The castle has hosted many writers, including József Kármán, who wrote his work Fanni’s Traditions here, a delicate depiction of the girl’s soul. After World War II, the building was first used as a girls’ home, then as a boarding school, and today there is a primary school within its walls.

The famous Hegyek cellar row rivals the country’s famous Hajós cellar row in terms of its beauty and orderliness.

The distinctive natural value of the area is the source area of the Gerje stream in the peat bog area, which is one of the very rare lowland springs. The Gerje is a real living watercourse, which emerges in the Pilis vineyard, with its sources and spring-derived tributaries, forming a biological corridor to the main catchment Tisza. Among the wet, fresh, layered vegetation, there is a unique orchid species in Hungary and the largest continuous alder forest in Central Europe. Among the protected water birds, you can also find the mallard, the grebe and the reed bunting. The area of the source of the Gerje stream, which has been re-enchanted in recent years, has been expanded with a recreation park. The landscape forms a coherent unit with tMillennium Memorial Park. This landscape, with its unique flora and fauna in Hungary, can offer an extraordinary sight at any time of the year.

Guests visiting the city can enjoy a rich program at the Csillo riding school, which has been operating for several years, where the Csillo riding days are held annually. There is also a boarding riding school here, mainly for children.

Come and visit us too, the organizers are waiting for you!
